Independent 20th Century
Battery Maritime Building, New York
8-11 September 2022
Hervé Bize is enjoying long standing relationships with both European and American Artists who have developped their works spanning different mediums while considering the artistic situations of both continents, essentially since the 1970’s.
The gallery itself has focused a large part of its activities on being present in the United States,
especially in New York, through art fair participations as well as collaborations with New York
galleries or institutions.
Always in this idea of creating a bridge between these two artistic scenes, Hervé Bize wished to
associate himself with Nicole Klagsbrun on the occasion of the inaugural edition of Independent
20th Century. We want to propose a collaborative booth that combine our experiences and the history of our galleries, in a common desire, marked by the moment they were created: in 1984 for Cable Gallery, Nicole’s first gallery in association with Clarissa Dalrymple, then on her own in SoHo in 1989, the same year as Hervé Bize under the first name of Galerie Art Attitude.
This project is also an opportunity to highlight the relationship between Europe and the United
States through the works that will be brought together and that the two galleries have endeavored to discover through privileged exchanges with artists of different generations.
The periods concerned mainly go from the 1960’s to the end of the 1980’s and are focused around conceptual art, abstraction and representatives of the Beat Generation.
Selected works by: Cameron, John Giorno, Bryon Gysin, Raymond Hains, Wallace Berman, George Herms, Jay deFeo, François Morellet, André Cadere, Raoul Hausmann.
